Camp Internet Teacher Briefing
BackCountry Studies
For the Week of December 6-12
Camp Internet Backcountry Teachers Briefing
Increasing Activities
The Camp is increasing the number of hands-on, parallel, and online
activities for students as the year continues. You will find numerous
quizzes, challenges, art activities, home projects, film suggestions, and
activities to enrich the classroom. These projects help the students put
their knowledge to work, and test their reading comprehension, problem
solving, and technology literacy skills. We encourage the use of these
additional activities as a way to bring the online materials to life in
the classroom and school year, and to get parents involved in the learning
activities at home weekends and evenings.
Astronomy
This week we are focusing a lot of energy on our Astronomy section, The
Archaeoastronomy history section has live links to ancient observatories,
sacred landscapes, and cosmological art from around the world. The new
Solar System section offers you a challenging set of questions and a path
to search for their answers on a group of valuable astronomy sites. And
the History of Astronomy quiz will soon be ready for students to test
their knowledge using the Astronomy history time line.
Astronomy Live Chat - Mark the Date
We hope you will soon be taking advantage of the wonderful Remote Access
Astronomy Project's telescope that you can access over the Internet. We
provided training in the IN-service session on this resource, and if you
need more help, don't hesitate to write. One of the lead Astronomers from
the UC Santa Barbara Physics Department will be coming online Tuesday
December 7th as our guest Trail Guide, so please tune in, 10am, and learn
more about astronomy, and the RAAP resources.
Teachers Report
There will be two mid-year reports for every teacher to fill out online
and submit to us by the holidays. Please go into the Teachers Base Camp
and complete these forms. One asks general participation questions; the
other asks for specific content track level of participation feedback. We
welcome your comments as we continue to test and modify the Camp every
month, and teacher input is appreciated. These reports are required
contributions from all subscribed classrooms.
Backcountry History and Reading
Please keep working on the Alta California period, learn about the first
explorers and early settlers in California -and the colorful behavior of
some very unusual men. There are two Alta California quizzes for students
that will be available to take to test their knowledge. In reading, we
provide you with actual source materials from, or about, the period, and
the Zorro section provides ample activities in the classroom and at
home. It is very important that students understand this period before
American rule as it shaped the future of California culture and economy.
