Trade
The Shasta conducted trade with the Karok who lived down the Klamath River,
towards the Pacific Ocean, from them. From the Karok they could receive
salt, seaweed, baskets, tan oak acorns, shells, and canoes. The Shasta
would trade obsidian, deerskins and sugar pine nuts to their neighbors.
Oaks become scarce and cease to thrive at this northern limit of California
and the acorn flour became very valuable as a nourishing food that could
be stored for hungry winter nights. The Shasta had native black and white
oak acorns available locally. Seashell beads were also a highly valued
commodity, being brought up the Klamath from the coastal tribes
