Distance Learning Project Science and History Fair OptionCamp staff will be assigned to coordinate Science and History Fairs on a regional basis for participating afterschool programs wherever possible. Suggested locations for these Fairs will be at the public libraries serving the same family base as the afterschool programs. The purpose of these Fairs is to unite the students in an outreach activity that shares their accomplishments with their larger community - inviting families, friends, elected representatives, and local businesses to become aware of the rewarding afterschool program. The Fairs will be a combination of Earth / Living Science and History/ Social Studies displays that reflect the student learning activities and projects that have taken place during the year. The displays will be mounted on a folding backdrop for table top display, and can include hands-on activities or sample materials for public use. Examples of Fair displays : a comparison of the trade materials exchanged between prehistoric islanders and mainland Native Americans; diagrams of the skeletons of the prehistoric pygmy mammoths discovered on the islands; models of the Missions that absorbed the native islanders; a history of the films that have been made on the islands; a demonstration of uses for kelp; a chart of sea mammals living in the Channel; a time line for the discovery of oil in the Channel; examples of native and non-native animal or plant life and their abundance or scarcity on the Islands today. All Fair participants can receive awards of recognition during the Spring Parent Night program recommended to be held in conjunction with the Fair. Click here to return Home
