March 1-5

Intertidal Zone

We will be spending the next few weeks studying the marine environment in the Channel, with the following topics / dates :

Intertidal - March 1-5
Tidepools - March 8-12
Kelp Forest - March 15-19
Reef - March 22-26
Marine Mammals - March 29 - April 2

We are working on scheduling for chats with the Directors of the Catalina Island Conservancy and Cabrillo High School Aquarium - plus - some live video for you to watch from the aquarium site in Lompoc. These special events will be announced as they are confirmed.

Special Opportunity

If any Camp Outpost Teachers are off track at the end of the month, and would like to attend a symposium on the California Islands, there are openings in the 5th Annual California Islands symposium being held in Santa Barbara March 29-April 1. The Camp will be a poster presenter and we welcome any interested / available teachers to attend one or more days to learn directly from scientists from across the country. The keynote is with the scientist who excavated the pygmy mammoth we have been learning about that was discovered on Santa Rosa Island in 1994. If you would like to attend, let us know where we can fax you the application. The US Dept. of the Interior, Minerals Management, is underwriting the symposium, and it is free with advanced registration.

Touch Tank Plans

This special offering from the channel Islands National Park is now being coordinated for April, and will be able to visit 4-5 classrooms. We will be in touch with classrooms the Park is able to serve, and will let everyone see the outcome online with photos posted to the web. If it is possible to coordinate a field trip from your school to the closest touch tank site, please let us know and we will link you up with the host school / teacher. Also, in investigating why some of the bioluminescent plants did not glow, we learned that they needed to be opened and exposed to indirect sunlight with in 5 days of shipping. The Sunnyside Sea Farm has offered to re-mail to the classrooms who did not get them open in time. They will be arriving at your school later this month.

Field report due March 15th
Click Here for the Report Form
We have issued the template for the mid-year field report by the listserv and on the web. Please respond as is convenient for you - you can even print it out and return it by mail. This is an assessment tool that is helping the camp shape itself for future years, and you input is definitely welcome. Please send it, if by email, to camp@rain.org, not back to the listserv, to ensure your privacy.

Camp Calendar

The Camp Calendar, accessible from the bottom of the left side bar on the main web page, has been updated to reflect all activities confirmed for the spring months. Please keep an eye on it to see when special events are planned, and to coordinate your own classroom's participation. New events will be added as confirmed.
