Week Two - March 8-12

Tidepools

This week we are hosting a special touch tank presentation at the Oak View School in Oak View, California. Island Packers, the expedition company that takes travelers out to the Islands, will be bringing the live tank to Oak View for a family night presentation that also includes a presentation by Camp Internet Trail Guide, Wes Chapin, from California State Parks. The Public Library in Oak View is also participating, making materials available for parents to encourage family literacy.

The touch tanks are excellent tidepool study opportunites, and we will bringing more to the classrooms next month through the Channel Islands

National Park. Treasure Hunt <>To compliment the text available online about tidepools, we will be hosting a Camp Treasure Hunt to learn about the creatures that inhabit these fascinating pools along the Channel Coast. The Treasure Hunt will be opened - and monitored - Friday the 12th. Respectful language and behavior is required, and we appreciate student and teacher response affirming this requirement. The Treasure Hunts are one of the Camp's most popular features and we encourage positive educational use of this fun learning environment. Open 8 am - 5pm.

Bioluminescent Plants

We are going to try to resend the plant samples out to the classrooms whose were not opened in time, or for other reasons were not able to enjoy this great learning tool. The concept is to have students take turns baby-sitting the creatures by taking them home and night and sharing them with their families. They can also be viewed in any dark room or closet during the daytime hours. Remember to avoid direct light, and just gently swish or tap the waters to see the exciting light show. New classrooms joining us this spring will also be sent the samples from Sunnyside Sea Farms. We are aiming to get them in your hands next week.

California Island Symposium

Fellow teacher Janice Ross from Lake Arrowhead is planning to attend the Channel Islands Symposium and will serve as a Camp Counselor, reporting back on her findings by text and video. This symposium is bringing together scientists in many fields from around the world to share their research and findings regarding life in the California Channel. We welcome Janice as a Camp Counselor, and look forwards to seeing her reportage of the event. The Camp will be sharing news of your student's work with the attendees during special project presentations. If you would like to send a question to a scientist, we will be glad to present it during the event and report back on the answers we receive and we are trying to coordinate a live chat with the scientists right there on site. We'll keep you posted.

Field Reports Due

Please remember the Outpost Field Report for mid year review is due Monday March 15th, and we encourage you to get the report to us by the end of this week. It was sent out on the listserv, and is also on the web site. How ever works best for you, please let us know how things are going.
