Channel Fish

This week we are exploring some of the fish that live in the Channel waters. They come in all sizes and shapes - some bigger than people and one the second largest fish in the world ! We are experimenting with some simple interactive features that we ask your classrooms to test out - a coloring page to print out, a fish gallery with a multiple choice challenge quiz, and a fill-in-the-box questionnaire about the fish that have been identified. Let us know which of these is a useful tool by writing to camp@rain.org. Next week a small group of classrooms will be having a Channel Islands National Park Ranger visit them for a presentation on marine mammals that live on the islands. If this proves a valuable component, we will expand it next year. Schools currently scheduled for a visit include Oro Grande, Valley View, Maple, North Verdemont, and Lake Arrowhead. If you are a school site having a visit, please have your students log onto the Camp chat room to tell us what they learned in the visit, and to share information with other students. This is an exercise that will help them develop their reporting skills in a socially responsible environment. Every classroom should use the chat room next week to stay in touch with the other students as often as possible and read their reports.

Field Trips - something for everyone

The schools who have been regular participants and who are signed up for a year-end field trip will be visiting Anacapa or Catalina Island in May or June. If your school was not able to participate as fully as you expected, but would still benefit from a year-end field trip, we have made arrangements for potential mainland Los Angeles area field trip activities at the Southwest Museum and the Aquarium of the Pacific. We invite any class that has participated in any study unit to arrange a trip to one of these sites for a social studies or marine biology learning experience, and we will send a Camp Counselor escort to meet you. Being a pilot project, some teachers experienced unexpected delays and changes this year as they began testing this new learning medium. The Camp wants to help our teachers make the most of the program, and will work with you to schedule a field trip if you can provide transportation to the site for your students. Family Nights The Camp will have representatives at Family Nights this spring at Nipomo, Guadalupe, Lake Arrowhead, and Oaks Middle School. Please let us know if you have a Family Night coming up where we can provide support in your classroom or computer lab to let parents know about the resources their children can access through Camp Internet.

Sustainable Seas Expedition. If your classroom can make it to Santa Barbara for a family day on June 5th, please let us know. Parents and students are welcome at the National Geographics Sustainable Seas Expedition Open House at the Santa Barbara Harbor. Kids can try out a mock submersible complete with instrumentation panels, and Camp Internet will be displaying student work for all to see.
