Camp Internet Science BriefingIn preparation for our first field trips out to the Islands starting next week, we have chosen to focus again this week on plant identification. By the week's end, the image library will fully accompany the plant text, and students should be familiarizing themselves with the native, endemic, exotic, endangered, and poisonous plants. For the field trips to the islands, each student should bring a print out of the plant identification pages, and a notepad and pencil for note taking while on the nature hikes. Trail Guide Carol Peterson from the Channel Islands National Park toured six classrooms last week and reports that the students were all enthusiastic, informed, and excited by the materials presented. Teachers are reporting the sessions were a real hit with the students. What we look forwards to this week is each student taking the time to please post a short description of what they learned to the chat room so we can all learn from their new knowledge. Please be sure to have your students include their name, grade level, and school in their postings. Next week, the first field trips launch to the Islands. Oro Grande and Lake Arrowhead will be heading out to Catalina, and also Round Valley and Oak View - Arnaz will be on the island the same week. Camp directors will be on the island working with the classrooms, and testing the Internet broadcast facilities. For classrooms back on the mainland - please watch the chat room for updates from fellow students posted via the USC Wrigley Environmental Institute at Two Harbors and the Catalina Island Marine Institute at Toyon Bay. Last call for the web class If you are a Camp teacher and would like to attend the free web class in Lake Arrowhead on May 15th, 9am-4pm, please make a reservation this week. Cut off date for sign ups is May 7th.
