Camp Internet Science Briefing

March 22 - April 2

Marine Mammals and the California Island Symposium

We are combining the briefing to span two weeks since we have been, and will be again, on the road a lot during this period. For Marine Mammals, we are posting both general science information on what types of animals are considered Marine Mammals, and then providing more detail on the Marine Mammals that inhabit or visit the Channel. A special feature is video taken out on a Santa Cruz Island trip with the National Marine Sanctuary, National Geographic, and ABC. While this trip did not land on the island, it was part of the WHAPS project - the Whale Habitat and Prey Study. To see the video, go to the box beneath the general Marine Mammal resource page, and select from the different short segments. If you need to install the video viewing software, and want some help, write to help@rain.org for directions.

California Island Symposium

This is the 5th Symposium on this subject, and has scientists and historians from across the country participating. Camp Directors Timothy Tyndall and Marcy Montgomery will be there coordinating interactions with scientists and historians as Camp Internet representatives, and your fellow teacher Janice Ross from Lake Arrowhead will also be on hand as an official Camp Counselor and will be reporting back on the exciting news she is learning during the event - and hopefully getting some digital photos online too. Our goal is to have the Camp Counselor online at the lunch breaks to report on the days events, and to coordinate live chats with the speakers whenever possible.

Chat Events

To increase the likelihood for doing successful live chats with representatives at the Symposium from universities across the country, and from National Parks and National Sanctuaries, we are aiming at hosting chat times at specific intervals. Please let us know which of these days and times you can bring students online : Monday March 29th 2:30-3:00, Tuesday March 30th 10:00-10:30, and 2:30-3:00, and Wednesday March 31st 10:00-10:30 and 2:30-3:00. We will then match up classes who reserve chat time with guest Trail Guides while we are onsite. If you can't attend at those times, but would like to drop in and read the information and post questions, please let us know. We will draw attention to your questions with the Trail Guides when they can come online to answer your student inquiries.

CUE Conference

A reminder to let us know if you will be attending CUE this May from the 6th - 8th in Palm Springs. We invite you to come by the Camp Internet booth and be in touch while you are there. And we would like to presen special students projects at the booth, so will have a large backdrop to post student art and science works. If you have more to send us, please do in April so we can prepare the booth.

Virtual Science and History Fair

The Camp has been invited to host a special display at the Channel Islands National Park Headquarters in Ventura on May 27th during the Sustainable Seas Expedition special Media and Education Day. The materials we receive in April will be integrated into not only the booth for CUE, but also for the Sustainable Seas Expedition media day with National Geographic, the National Park, and the National Marine Sanctuary - plus - lots of media coverage.

We think knowing the media, National Geographic and the National Parks and Sanctuary will be looking at their online work - and selected physical Fair work - will be great motivation to encourage student participation.

<>This is an excellent event to aim towards for completion of the Camp Internet Virtual Science and History Fair projects, so let us know what your students will be contributing. All student projects will be posted online, and then selections will be made to determine which projects should be mailed to us for inclusion in the physical exhibit.
