Camp Internet - Expedition III, Briefing 11
Commercial Development of the Channel
November 30 - December 4
Overview
This is the closing week of Expedition III, and we will be looking at
commercial fishing, mariculture, and oil development histories. You will
be receiving the mariculture product - the glow-in-the-dark bioluminescent
creatures, and the package of educational materials from the California
Seafood Council ( representing the commercial fishing industry ). We will
look at both sides of these developments - how oil came to be discovered,
and some of the controversies about the oil industry. We will look at
commercial fishing methods, and some of the controversy about over fishing
and the new no-take zones that are trying to restore the over-fished areas
of American oceans. You were provided with an abalone shell at the
beginning of the program - this is also a mariculture product we will be
learning about this week.
You will now start to see the members of M.E.R.A. take a more prominent
role in the program - M.E.R.A. is the Marine Educators Regional Alliance
who provided speakers and site visits for us during the summer months, and
is an organization that RAIN provides technology assistance for. These
partners will become the expert Trail Guides for the remainder of the
school year. We will be learning more about them during December.
Special Chat Event
The live chat for this week takes place on December 3rd, 9-11am. We have
Dr. Bruce Karger, mariculture entrepreneur, on board, and other guests
will be confirming during the week. If you can not meet during these
morning chats - please let us know what dates and times work for you. We
can be flexible in scheduling and want each class to have an opportunity
to enjoy these dynamic learning activities that work in any classrooms
with at least one online computer.
Community Nights
This week the class of Jim Jones at Valley View in Coachella is hosting a
Community Night. Please join us December 1st, 7:30-8:30 for a live online
chat - you can easily log on from home. These Nights are proving a great
success in generating community awareness of the technology activities in
the schools, and we have seen school administrators, parents, librarians,
students, and the press in attendance. A second round is planned for the
Spring, and at least one Community Night is required of all field trip
participants.
Camp Counselor
Susan Barkdoll will be available for visiting classrooms during the first
three weeks of December. These site visits are helping teachers learn
about features of the Camp they were not previously aware of, are useful
in providing one-on-one for the students, and are giving teachers and
students an opportunity to try technology features they have not yet had a
chance to use in the classroom. Please coordinate visits with Susan
directly at raider@rain.org, or through camp@rain.org. We are asking the
Counselors to report on their findings in the field, and will be adapting
the January - June program accordingly to better meet your needs. Use the
visit to let us know what works - and what needs improvement - during this
pilot year.
Field Trips
Please see the camp-outpost-l listserv for details on live field trip
opportunities. We have classes scheduled for Catalina, Anacapa, and
Channel whale watching - let us know what works for you so we can plan the
technology component that gives your students as role as reporters and
broadcasters back to the other classrooms. We have underwater, land based,
and ship board technology activities ready to serve you and your
students.
