![]() Camp Internet Expedition II. - Briefing 5Week October 19-23 Ahoy me maties !! This week the program moves from the Channel's early European explorers into its privateers, pirates, the Mission era and the Mexican rancho period before California Statehood. If you are joining us late, please review the introductory resources for Expedition I. and / or II. And then get right on track with the week's resources. Remember you can take an extra few hours anywhere along the way to go back and assign catch-up assignments or make classroom presentations of previous material. * Technology Literacy goals for this week are to get more students registered on the listserv that is for student activities. If your students do not have time to each open their own private email box every day or even every week, please use the clan names to organize them into four small groups per classroom and then have them get on the listserv using those clan name accounts. We need to be able to communicate with the students as a group - and encourage them to communicate with one another using the listserv as a technology literacy tool. * To get the students subscribed to the list : have them go to http://pueblo.rain.org and log in either in a small group using a clan name, or individually with their own id and password. Once they are in that mail area, have them send a message to : request-camp-students-l@rain.org. In this email, they need only type subscribe in the subject line - no message should be sent. Once that message is sent, they should receive a confirmation response with in an hour, and the next time they log in will find new mail from the listserv in their box. * For teachers - our Outpost Leaders - we need you to do the same from your RAIN account. We are already sending mail to your personal or work accounts via the list, but want to walk you through the same process using your rain.org account. The message you send from http://pubelo.rain.org account should go to request-camp-oupost-l@rain.org. Again, type subscribe in the subject line, and no message is needed. This is also part of the teacher * For this week and next - your special assignment is to pick a two hour time slot, 8am-10am, or 10am-12noon, where we can host a private Camp Chat with you and your students. This chat will be an opportunity to conduct an Internet treasure hunt and will see your student tracking down answers online to questions they find posted in the chat room for them. Where ever possible, we will match you up with another classroom for some friendly competition. * We will be posting Trail Guide information this week for the Early California period, so keep an eye for the addition of new Trail Guides that you can send your questions to. We are scheduling an online chat for next week, so please have your students cover as much of the materials as possible so they can compile good research questions in preparation for the chat. * We also will be opening the Student Gallery as we have begun to receive drawings and photographs of our intrepid Trail Blazers at work ! Keep sending them - they will be an excellent resource to share with parents and other teachers considering joining the Camp in future years. * Speaking of Parents...Coming Up ! Fall Camp Community Night. We will be coordinating a week in November where we will co-host evening programs especially for your students families and the general community. This will be a night for you to have the class share their learning experiences with Camp Internet with their parents and community members. See the following email for more details - and rest assured, we will be shipping you the flyers, refreshments and hand outs for the event. We will just need you to pick a date and then get the word out. Special Guests will be available for live chats 7-8 pm the week of November 17-19th, so start thinking about which night you can open your classroom to your community. We will host another Community Night in the Spring to share the results of our year end virtual Science and History fair activities. These are excellent school/community partnership building opportunities !! Please let us know of any way in which we can assist you in integrating Camp Internet into your classrooms - technology or time management hurdles we can work on getting over together. And thanks for working with us - these first few weeks have been very rewarding for all actively participating as the glowing letters from teachers attest ! Write camp@rain.org,(click right here), or post to the camp-outpost-l@rain.org listserv. And remember, you have a Camp Counselor who will start visiting classrooms later this month for hands-on technical and program support. You can reach your Camp Counselor, Susan Barkdoll at raider@rain.org. Forward Ho ! Return to Camp Home Web Return to Expedition Classroom |
