Clan of the Dolphin

,br> The Dolphin is regarded by the Chumash who were native to the Channel islands and mainland as not just an important animal, but actually as one of their ancestors. You can read about the Rainbow Bridge legend online in the Camp that explains how the Chumash who crossed from the Islands to the mainland, and fell into the sea, became dolphins who remain relatives of the Chumash today. See Coyote’s Campfire on the Camp web to read the legend.

The Dolphins are playful marine mammals who enjoy swimming and surfing the shoreline waves along the Channel coast in small groups called pods. To see how they slip into the middle of a wave as it arcs and crests, and surf the powerful wave with ease, is to understand how perfectly designed their bodies are for the life they live in the sea.

In the Channel, mariners often see a variety of dolphins, many time swimming in the ater beside their boats that is churned as the prow of the boat breaks the water.

In the Camp, the Clan of the Dolphin represent the Water Animals, are an important element in the overall character of the Camp. To learn more about dolphins, click here.
