![]() Camp Internet Expedition II - Briefing 6
This is the final week of Expedition II We will learn about smugglers, shipwrecks, North Pacific hunters, and sea otter over-hunting. This week is also an opportunity to participate in a Face-the-Challenge called "Shipwrecked" that takes the whole class on a voyage from San Francisco to San Diego, with up to four major catastrophes confronted in their efforts to reach San Diego safely. Classes who complete the Challenge will post their ship’s log to the student listserv, and will then receive gold ( chocolate ) coins by mail as a result of completing the Challenge.
Student accounts
Please try to take the time this week to get every student logged into their own email account, and then when in that account, logged onto the listserv. Even if they won’t use the email account often, it assists the Camp in assessing the level of participation to measure the number of students who have been walked through this procedure. Some students may then go home and use the account from a home computer - or at the public library, but it needs to be set up for them from the classroom.
We have five more classrooms taking part in the online chat room treasure hunt this coming week - and room for more if you would like to sign up. When ever possible, we will match you up with another class to add a human dimension - and an air of friendly competition - to the treasure hunt. The interactive learning sessions will continue through out the year and we hope to get as many classrooms as possible initiated into the procedure during Expedition II.
Expedition II Main Chat - Friday October 30th - 9am - 2:30
pm.
9am-10am - Dr. Georgia Fox, curator at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum and underwater archeologist.
10am-11:30am - Dr. Jarrell Jackman, Executive Director of The Santa Barbara Trust for historic Preservation which manages the El Presidio State Park. Noon - 2:30pm - Treasure Hunt - especially for the classes that didn’t have an opportunity to schedule a private treasure hunt earlier. If your class can not participate on Friday, please post questions on Thursday in the chat room and see the answers on Monday.
November Camp Community Internet Night- this is a good week to schedule the date and time for inviting members of your community to visit your classroom November 17,18 or 19, 7-8:30 pm ( we sent email about this last week ). We will have special guests online to chat with, will provide refreshments, and send you ample hands outs. We need our teachers to schedule the time with their school’s permission, then send home the invitations, and if possible get an announcement in the school newsletter. Your Camp Counselor, Susan Barkdoll, will be mailing out the flyers and refreshment packages as soon as we know which classrooms can participate, and on what dates. If November does not work for you, please schedule an event in early December and we will work to make the event a holiday presentation for your families.
IMPORTANT DEADLINE for registered teachers whose classes are not
yet online with the Camp.
As we enter the sixth week of the Camp program, it is becoming critically important that all classrooms come online - even if your individual class hasn’t gotten wired yet - come visit the Camp from your library computer, or computer lab. We have a waiting list for classrooms that have wanted to participate, and are finding we have several classes registered that have technical hurdles that have prevented them from participating so far. We need to know you intend to participate via a private email this week, or we will need to invite the alternates to take your position. If you have not logged on yet, please write camp@rain.org, or call 1-800-889-2823 to let us know your intended start date. If you will be unable to participate, we will need you to ship your Expedition Crate and contents to the Camp Counselor, Susan Barkdoll at North Verdemont School, so it can be reassigned to a new classroom. We do not want to lose anyone unintentionally - so please let us know your plans ! If you need us to lend you a computer, and you have an outside phone line, let us know - we are here to help you succeed in delivering the Camp program to your students.
Student Gallery - keep sending us your work - we are building the gallery this week and want to include all work possible to date. By regular post, or digital ( PC based file to rain@rain.org please ). Thanks !
And, Happy Halloween !!! we’d welcome pictures of any of your kids costumed as pirates, Native Americans, priests, or European explorers for the Camp web
