Island of the Blue Dolphins - Challenge
This art challenge follows the activites for the week of Sept 20-24 in the Channel Islands program - it can be a classroom or a home project.

As you read through or watch Island of the Blue Dolphins, and learn about the Lone Woman of San Nicolas, imagine yourself on an island all alone. What plants and animals would be there on the land and in the water ? What would you build for a house ? How would you protect yourself from fierce wild animals ? What would you wear ? What would you eat for food and how would you get it ? Imagine your life alone on an island as if you too had been stranded for a few weeks and were later rescued ....
* Art Project
Now, draw us a picture of what your life would be like on that island
where you found yourself living as you imagined being stranded for a few
weeks. Show us how you would live. And on another sheet of paper, tell us
the story of how you came to be there, what life was like and how you were
rescued. If you have the chance, share your picture and story with other
students and listen to their stories as you look at their pictures.
