How to Start Class up Online, Who your Trail Guides Are and
Your First Assignment

After the first week with the program, Camp Internet hopes that you be comfortable accessing your email account hosted by the Camp, and that you sign-up for the either the student or teacher Listserv.

For teachers:
To signup for the listserv send email to
camp-outpost-l-request@rain.org
in the subject line type subscribe.
Leave the message part of the email blank.
You’ll receive a welcome email shortly after subscribing.

For Students:
Send email to:
camp-students-l-request@rain.org
In the subject line type subscribe and send the email.

Once you have subscribed to the listserv send an email note to the list and introduce yourself. If you are a teacher let the group know about your class and school. If you are a student share your interests as you begin to explore the history of the channel islands.

When Your Class Gets Started
First:
Make sure we have a list of student names so we can issue the student log-ins. Send us their names and ages by email in a list to camp@rain.org. Then we will send back their user ids and passwords. Once you have that information, fill in the front page of their passport so they have a record of their log-in and password. Distribute the printed Camp Passports - or if they already have them, provide each student with their own account information so they can fill in the passport.

Be sure to keep your passowrds private. Each account belongs to the student to whom it is issued and it is that students responsibility to keep their password private to avoid misuse of thier account.

Especially for Teachers:
Share your experience during the training program in Santa Barbara with your students. Let them know about the Camp from your own point of view - what you want to see them accomplish, the challenges you think lay ahead, and the positive results you expect from their participation. Show them the laminated map and where they live in relation to the Channel Islands - and in relation to Santa Barbara where the Camp headquarters are.

Next, go online and let the class view the main Camp web site. Open the Image Map and practice navigating to the different islands to access introductory materials.

A central way each student participates is through the questions asked of Trail Guides via the listserv and through dialog with other students via the listserv. Everyone, students, teachers and parents, should make active use of the list.

Teachers and Parents can work with students to think out questions for different Trail Guides in advance so when a special chat or listserv session takes place they are ready with a set of good questions.

Students can get together in specific classroom teams to work out a set of 5 or 10 questions for an upcomming Trail Guide.
