Dr. Richard Hilton Dr. Hilton is a professor in the Geology Department at Sierra College in California. He also is on the Sierra College Foundation Museum committee, and organizes the annual Dinosaur Day public education event for the college. As a geologist, Dr. Hilton of course studies rocks. But while studying rock formations, many geologists come across fossils of ancient plant and animal life that have been trapped and preserved in rock and sediment for thousands, even hundreds of thousands of years. In fact, he was hunting for ancient seashell fossils called ammonites ( just like you have in your Outpost Supply Kit ), when he made a most unexpected discovery. Dr. Hilton discovered the bones of the oldest known dinosaur in California, a find that is the oldest known dinosaur on the west coast of the United States. In fact, this specific find in the backcountry of Shasta County also got other scientists thinking that maybe there was more dinosaur life in California than had been previously imagined. Our live chat with Dr. Hilton is scheduled during the BackCountry Paleontology session on October 7th at 1pm for our program subscribers. To read more about Dr. Hilton's finds and studies, and prepare good questions for the live chat, follow this trail : What was discovered? Who found it ? Where it was found ? Other finds : Sierra rocks If you have a paleontology question your would like to send to Dr. Hilton to answer, please address it to drhilton@rain.org and we will make sure he sees the question. |
