| San Nicolas Island | ||
The
island of San Nicolas is 61 miles from the coast, and has a total area of
22 square
miles, and is the furthest sail from the mainland of any of the Channel
Islands. The island is roughly a plateau, with arroyos cutting down to the
shoreline. It is famous as being the home of the real Lone Woman of San
Nicolas who was stranded there for eighteen years. Her people had lived
peacefully on the island for generations until Northern fur trappers arrived
and tormented the native villagers who escaped as soon as possible. |
