It
was very dangerous to sail out to the islands - and very hard work to
paddle 25 or more miles in the open sea.
Teams
of paddlers would make the trip, carefully following the most protected
routes. As well as enabling travel, the canoes also allowed them to hunt
for fish that only lived in deep sea waters - squid and octopus too!
