Steve Palladino discussed Ventura College GIS classes for Fall, 2001. He also noted that anacapaGIS.org had won a finalist award at a recent ESRI competition.
Discussion was held regarding State of California efforts to create a statewide GIS network and clearinghouse, with participation by EPA, HHS, ESO, DOIT, Dept of Finance, and others. CIRGIS might consider joining such a network, or consider placing a representative on a statewide executive, decision-making body. Steve Nissan, who works under Gary Darling in the Governor's office, was scheduled to speak on this topic but was unable to attend. Steve may be available August 23 or 24 to make that presentation. Information regarding State efforts is available at www.gis.ca.gov, where there is also an archive of data sets recently made available.
Discussion was held about data sharing. Some members noted that providers of data, including some Counties and public agencies, wish to charge subscription fees, while other members noted that certain public agencies such as FEMA and HUD are beginning to require open data sharing.
Discussion was held to reaffirm CIRGIS mission and determine where CIRGIS is going. Consensus was that CIRGIS priorities are to: (1) Post Data Lists (2) Share and Exchange Data (3) Advocate for Open Data Sharing.
Action was requested to make progress toward these goals and the goals of recently-procured FGCD grant. Discussion was held regarding update of the CIRGIS web site to include posting of Data Lists and creation of a Data Set Archive. RAIN noted their readiness to proceed as web services provider and noted that domain name, drive space, DS3 bandwidth, ftp server, web server, IMS, and server administrator were in place. It was decided to proceed first with the compilation of a Data List and later with posting of Data Sets. Members are to forward data set descriptions and contact info to RAIN for posting to web.site at www.cirgis.org. Web site was reviewed and members commented on content needs and suggested possible formats for CIRGIS Data List.
Next meeting was scheduled for September 25, 2 - 4 pm at Ventura College Science Center, Room 333. |
