Dear Fellow Naturalist,
I was all set to write about what a fun day Gail Narkevic, Josh, and myself
had, while doing the floating lab class out on the "Coral Sea" with 35, 6th
grade students from Oxnard's Christa McAuliffe Elementary School.
But I can¹t believe what I just read in a TV production magazine and I¹m
quoting here ³With all the great success of the CBS show ³Survivor² the
producers have announced their next exotic destination will be San Miguel
Island! Shooting will take place later this summer.
Russell E. Galipeau, Jr. the Superintendent of the Channel Islands National
Park which San Miguel Island is part of, was hesitant at first to have a big
Hollywood production going on at the park because ³the protection of the
fragile island resources is our number one agenda, but since the park is one
of the least visited of all of America¹s national parks. We sure could use
the high profile exposure a show like this could give the Channel Islands².
Central to the plan will be forcing the members of each tribe to form living
areas in the middle of the elephant seal colony. ³Considering that a male
elephant seal can weight upwards of 5000 pounds, this will add a great
element of excitement to the show. We¹re also especially curious to see how
the seals react to the humans during mating season.² said Frieda Wales, the
shows marine biology expert. "Survivor" producer Emma Foolingya, felt that
³once the bulls get aggressive, some of the people will be begging to be
voted off the island.² Survivor - San Miguel Island will air on CBS in early
2009.
Well there you have it. This is very upsetting news and all but ruined my
April Fools Day. Hope you had a good one!
Staci ;)
