Today I was one of several CINC volunteers at the well attended Oxnard Earth Day 2008, my first outreach event. At at Oxnard's lovely Plaza Park, La Plazita, under the organization of the CINMS NOAA MERITO Bilingual Community Liason Rocio Lozano de Knowlton, I met her, passionate elementary school teachers from Ventura, Oxnard and Pt. Hueneme, and students and others involved in school programs, as well as the the general public. Inspiring! Represented were forty-six organizations and six food vendors. I was told Congresswoman Lois Capps visited earlier to show her interest and support, leaving a flyer which noted: "...Earth Day holds particular significance for our community, because the idea was conceived after Senator Gaylord Nelson visited Santa Barbara to witness the devastating effects of the 1969 oil spill." Her flyer also describes environmental legislation she has introduced or co-sponsored.
