Eight hopeful passengers joined Capt. Rich, Mario and this writer on the
1130 outing. A small group of commons, perhaps 6, escorted the DD around
Stearns Wharf and along the coast. Then, upon word that grays had been spotted in
the opposite direction, the DD turned about and headed west. A lone otter was
spotted on the way, opposite the wharf. Perhaps this momentary diversion gave
the gray whales an opportunity to give us the slip, which they did without so
much as a visible blow. So, the leisurely and pleasant voyage up the coast
and back was spent scanning the waters and describing landmarks to the guests,
all of whom received "whale checks"
