I am posting this because it is a situation I just became aware of, but it
has been existing for a little over two or three months, I think. It is a
situation which I believe impairs our efforts to interpret and spread an
appreciation of the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary. It is a
situation, which quite frankly, makes no sense at all to me.
I am talking about the parking around the Island Packers building in Ventura
Harbor. All the parking spaces near the water are marked for a three hour
limit. This seems like over half the parking. There are no stores or
restaurants around the Island Packer building. I ask you, what can anyone do in
under three hours at this harbor location? Boat owners don't come & go in under
three hours. Island Packers doesn't have one trip that is under three
hours.
So when I got to Island Packers 1/2 hour before the trip left, I along with
the other passengers, had to drive past dozens & dozens of empty parking
spaces, a quarter of a mile down to find a parking space with no time limits. And
guess where I ended up parking?
In front of the stores and restaurants down the road. I took up a parking
space which could have better served the patrons of that part of the harbor for
three hours or less, while most of the spaces in between remained empty.
This seems like a goofy situation which serves neither the resident retail
establishments of Ventura Harbor, nor Island Packers, nor the National Park or
Marine Sanctuary.
If you would like to make comment on it, call the Ventura Harbor Port
District at 805//642-8538.
