Regarding an email from Sept. 11 regarding a blue whale sighted with a greenish-yellowish algae like coloration on
his dorsal and ventral rear area? Is this significant for ID purposes and does
anyone know what this coloration might be????

See John Calambokidis' response below.

Sorry for the delay in responding, have been in the field. This
is likely the fairly common diatom film many blue whales have that earned them
their name Sulphur-bottom. We have seen several whales with this year so it
seems to be a little more common this season.

Hi John,

See the description of the coloration from this blue whale sighting? Any idea
what may cause the color?

18 passengers enjoyed concierge service from Bill Strongly
and myself aboard the Condor. We had definite recorded sightings of 6 Blues
with numerous other blows in the region of the west end of SCI. We spotted 1
Minke about 10 min. out of the harbor and enjoyed 2 sightings of commons on our
return home from painted cave. It was a great day!!!
