Just a little addition to Bhrian's report of the lunge feeding Blues last Wed.
on the Condor.
Yes, I did get several pics of lunge feeding. Most were lateral lunges with
a few vertical lunges that I missed, because they were too far away.
Mat said the krill layer was pretty shallow, about 5 feet deep or less, so
you could see the krill jumping out of the water ahead of the lunge !
Apparently the krill stay closer to the surface when it is cloudy and go deeper
when the sun comes out, so the whales feed accordingly.
Sea state was Beaufort 0 at that point so it was easy to see all this activity.
Besides that, we could see little water squirts coming up out of the surface.
It was a group of squid catching krill and squirting each time they caught one,
in a patch close to the boat. All the blues were lunge feeding, and it was
a problem keeping track of what whale was in each picture. One was easy
to identify, because he had a bent right tail fluke that he showed right after
a lunge as he rolled on his side, expelling water. What a day ! Wish you all
could have been there. Be sure to look at Bob Perry's pictures. Carolyn
