As the processing power of computers increases, so does the ease with which students (or anyone) can simply "clip" and print copied images and call them their own. This increasingly cheap and easy practice holds implications for artists and photographers.
So when The Arts Fund approached me about conducting a "mentorship" program with a few of my students, I focused not on technical skills, but on originality, creativity, and the question of "ownership."
The Arts & Technology Workshop has been bringing arts and computer instruction to Santa Barbara high school students since 1989.
The students presenting this exhibit Whose Image is It? Ownership in the Digital Age are high school beginners. They do not necessarily break new ground in design. Yet, some of their works raise questions about ownership, copyright, originality, and plagarism - issues confronting artists, writers, printers, and photographers as they, too, scramble into the Digital Age.
