What awoke your interest
in Art? I've always been surrounded by art. My mother
as a performer/director, and my uncle as an artist, exposed me to art
on an everyday basis, so as a young boy I always had an interest in Art.
In High School I took a couple art classes, but it wasn't until I worked
on a mural sponsored by Santa Bárbara Parks & Recreation Teens Program
and Santa Bárbara Museum of Art, that I really felt that Art was going
to be my future.
Where do you find inspiration for your paintings? I find inspiration in the everyday occurences in my community. The way people interact with each other, the problems and struggles, and the cultural livings of the community. Music also inspires me tremendously.
What is your favorite style of painting? I
admire the style of expressionism Art.
Do you prefer a certain medium? I like to work with acrylics, plaster, wood, and barbed-wire.
How long have you been involved with Art? I remember my first drawing of an elephant at the age of five years. That was when I was first involved in Art.
What are your goals as an artist? My goals as an artist would be to obtain a Ph.D. and teach at the University level and to be successful in my artwork.
Are you influenced or inspired by any artists? I am influenced and inspired by the Mexican modern artist David Alfaro Siqueiros' use of three-dimensionality. I also really appreciate and admire how radical his works were and continue being. I am also inspired by the Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo's use of color.
What kind of artwork do you expect to be doing in the next 12 months or so? El arte de mi Loquera, where my art will be reflective of music, emotions, the human body, dreams, and culture. The latter influence my art at the present, but my art will be more abstract, universal, and emotional, following not the "laws of art", but the laws of my emotions.
How would you describe your style of work? My style of art includes 3-dimensional relief, cultural and political themes, lots of emotions, with a touch of fantasia.
