Manuel Unzueta, Chicano Artist

Chicano Art Title: Mi Cultura Riqueza, Chicano Art

What awoke your interest in Art?  My culture, my family traditions and my self-esteem. As youngster in a Mexican tradition art is a big activity in the schools and community. In my college days the Chicano Movement got me more interested in art.

Where do you find inspiration for your paintings?  I find inspiration in my spiritual need to put my cultural needs on canvas. I'm out of place when I'm not doing art. I love to paint meztizo faces, social concerns, nature and ecology, and love for family.

What is your favorite style of painting?  I am an artist who paints Expressionism with modernistic trends. My work is a combination of Mexican Realism with American abstractions. My childhood memories joined with humanistic concerns of today.

Chicano Art. Title: Altar Have you found other artists that share the same style as yourself?  It is hard to tell, but my work has many influences and many facets, growing up in Juarez, Mexico and Santa Barbara I have seen alot of situations and scenes that I try to express in my work.

Are you influenced or inspired by any artists?  Yes. I have been influenced by many artists. I borrow from them whatever inspires me. I would say David Alfaro Siquieros of Mexico, with the abstractions of Picasso are exciting to me.

Do you prefer a certain medium?  I like to use mixed media where my drawings include different outlets. My paintings are mostly acrylics with texture. I like different planes to paint on. Wood, masonite, and canvas board.

How long have you been involved with Art?  I have been involved with art since I was a child. My natural talents were obvious at the age of 6. Intuition, Inquisitiveness and alot of cultural imagery at school got me involved in art.

What are your goals as an artist?  I have no single goal, because my art is part of me. My art gives me hope and inspiration to set minor goals wherever my art can be of impact. Whether ina big gallery, another country, or in my house. I enjoy my art everyday.

What kind of artwork do you expect to be doing as you continue your artistic journey?  Currently, I am experementing with alot of color combinations and texture, but my themes are a combination of ecological images with cultural images, because of the demand for Latino art in the world.
