Summer Edition 2005

Coordinator's Column

Dear Tutors, Students and Supporters:

Before you head out on your vacation this summer, I hope you get a chance to read about the happenings here at FLAIR.
Our 16th Annual Spelling Bee was a great success! Inside is a list of donors who've contributed to FLAIR and "the bee" with their financial support. Many others also contributed with a helping hand. Thank you to the following: Reverend Kim, Nadine Lamano and the board at First United Methodist Church for use of Wesley Hall; all of the helpers who provided bake sale items, set up before the bee, staffed stations during the bee and cleaned up afterwards; including: Richard Abbott, Monica Michel, Maria Dowdy, Jim Newton, Joe Lyou, Dora Crouch, Dan Robles, Ed Geis, Vanessa Mendoza, Rosanna Mendoza, Elaine Hunt, Elvira Navarro, Alma Lino, Yeyo Lino, Desiree Lino, Debbie Johnson, Lisa Guina, Leticia & Juan Valdovinos, Michelle Crilly, Paula Clarke, Isaac Mendoza, Susan Branham, Carmen Guerrero, Barbara Suggs, Lydia Leon, Katie Brooks, Marie Marzec, Sue Alvarez, Beatrice Yzaguirre. Thank you to all those is the audience who stayed to cheer on the teams. Finally, a special thank you to Don & Debbie Johnson of the Santa Paula Times for their continual generosity in sponsoring our annual spelling bee fundraiser.
And last, but definitely not least, thank you to our year round volunteer tutors who give from the heart by taking time each week to teach a fellow Santa Paulan to read and write!

Happy Reading!
-Kathryn

EARLY RETIREMENT

Two of FLAIR's devoted tutors are unfortunately unable to continue with their learners, and have "retired" from volunteer tutoring.

During her almost 2 years with FLAIR, Irene Hess was a reliable, enthusiastic tutor for 7 different adult learners. She started out by tutoring 1 afternoon a week and, by the time she left, was a fixture here 3 days a week. After a career teaching music, Irene had decided to share her teaching skills by volunteering with FLAIR. The FLAIR staff and Irene's learners are glad that she did.

Ellen Appel has been a faithful FLAIR tutor since 1999. Along with her husband, George (also a FLAIR tutor), she could, until recently, be found in the library twice a week. As a retired library assistant for Ventura Unified School District, Ellen felt at home in a library setting and made her FLAIR learners feel at home, too. Since her initial training, Ellen has volunteered over 500 hours to the FLAIR program - all done with the smile and the pleasant manner that we will miss. Ellen welcomes visitors while she is residing at Twin Pines Health Care, here in Santa Paula.

Thank you Irene and Ellen for your gifts of time and caring.

Pronunciation Practice

For more pronunciation practice your student can go to
http://www.manythings.org and select American English Pronunciation Practice which contains a variety of minimal pair exercises that are very useful. Minimal pairs are pairs of words that have exactly the same pronunciation except for one sound, i.e. "she/see" or "not/note". Students can listen and repeat as many times as they wish and then select the correct pronunciation in a flash quiz. There are also songs, poems and tongue twisters to practice.

Travel Time

This past month of June our family reading time was also a family singing, dancing and tea-party time! Distributed by Scholastic Books, "You Are My Sunshine", "I'm a Little Teapot" and "The Hokey Pokey", are brightly illustrated story/songbooks that made for lots of family interactive fun. The children were delighted to watch their good natured parents perform the hokey pokey for them - even Abuela Elenito (who speaks only Spanish) followed the others who sang and danced to the words in English! The family that reads and plays together, learns, grows, and has fun together!

In The Spotlight!

Dorothy Grainger & Silvia Aguayo

Dorothy Grainger is a woman with many interests. She loves to garden, and to play bridge. She belongs to a local church. Even with all of her activities, Dorothy felt the need for another meaningful challenge. While visiting the library one day she learned about FLAIR, and decided to become a tutor. She recently moved to town from her ranch home and wanted to get involved helping others.
Silvia Aguayo came to Santa Paula a few years ago from Mexico, and heard about FLAIR from a relative. "All the time I wanted to learn," she said. "I wanted to learn more English. I wanted to improve my English. I came here to the library. They told me there was a course. I took the L-53 Test and got a tutor." Dorothy and Silvia have been working together ever since, and have covered the Challenger series. Silvia is also a college student, and she is studying to become an accountant. She is working toward improved English skills to help her get a good job.
Dorothy is proud of Silvia's accomplishments. "I appreciate the fact that she is working hard, and really trying." Dorothy said. "She does a lot of homework."
"I have improved my English skills. Listening, speaking and even writing, too," Silvia said. "We talk a lot." "She wanted to learn conversational English," Dorothy explained.
Both Dorothy and Silvia would recommend FLAIR to others. "I always do," Silvia said, "I'm tutoring at Ventura College here in Santa Paula, and I tell my students to come here to the Library." Dorothy recommends that others join the effort at FLAIR. "You ought to give something back," said Dorothy.
"I want to say thank you to Dorothy," Silvia said. "She is a very, very nice person, I'm very thankful to Dorothy because she is spending her time teaching me. She is very patient."
"I appreciate Kathryn Bornhauser, " Silvia said. "She's the first person I met at the library. She encouraged me to study, to not stop, to keep studying.
"I just want to thank the library, and the people who sponsor the library," she added. "We couldn't do this if they hadn't started the program."
